三姨 (3rd auntie) I drew this portrait of my aunt in 2016 when she was in hospital. I watched as Alzheimers rapidly took over, her memories, her ability to have conversations. Her face hardened by life with familiar simplicity, always content. But unfortunately by this time her eyes already lacked her usual sparkle. Instead, just a distant gaze of emptiness.

三姨 passed away. This is a portrait of her only daughter on a boat as the monk was performing final rites for the sea burial. The “send off” to the other world. In the end we only have the memories.
